Super Fogeys Spy Gal Origin Begins

And here’s page 1!

Spy Gal Origin - Page 1

Written and lettered by Brock Heasley of Super Fogeys and Monster Plex.

Pencils, inks and colors by me.

Coloring assistance by my extraordinarily talented wife,  Samantha. She is my savior, and decided to volunteer to help me with the grunt work of filling in flat colors as I finish up inking all the pages (11 in total). Final color pallet, effects, and shading by me.

I got the guest artist gig through an open call for artists that was judged by David Reddick who passed the art baton to me.

New pages will be posted every Tuesday on Super Fogeys until the story’s end at page 11. I will also be re-posting them here.

This is panel 1 of page three in the inking stage.  If you can correctly identify the vehicle models I used, you win the non-prize! My father got them pretty much right off.

I talk more about this project in my previous post, which you can also read here!

SF Page 1, Inks Preview!

Spy Gal Origin Inks Sample Page1

Quick update on the latest goings on. I’ve been working on a now 11-page guest artist gig for Brock Heasley for his webcomic, Super Fogeys. Specifically, the Super Fogeys Origins series. Brock uses the Origins short stories to expand on his character’s worlds and backgrounds. Which is awesome, since his comic is about super heroes later in life, they have a lifetime of accumulated adventures and backgrounds that Brock can pull from.

Despite the name, many of the previous SFO shorts have been side stories, rather than character origins. Though, the story I’m working on is the actual origin story for one of the main characters, Spy Gal.

On the left, you’ll see a preview of the inks from Page 1. This is actually a small panel, 1 of 8 on the page, but I’m showing it since it’s interesting without spoiling or revealing anything. Page 1 will be colored lettered and will debut on Super Fogeys Tuesday, August 31st. I’ll be posting more panels as I get them completed.

IWG Anthology Promo Video

I’ve got great news. Ryan McCracken of Boss Nacho productions attended our launch party for the anthology on April 23rd. As part of his Indy After Dark series, he put together a short video featuring our new book with clips from several of our group’s artists. That’s me right at the beginning of the video. Please excuse my facial tics and confused expression, I’m just dazzled by the lights and camera.

You can see the video on Ryan’s site, on youtube, or on the IWG website. The book can be purchased right here off the Indy Webcomic Group’s site, anywhere it says SUPPORT IWG Buy Now in the sidebar beneath a picture of the anthology cover.

$15 plus shipping will get you 148 pages from 19 different artists, spanning most genres from Slice of Life to Sci-fi and Noir. I illustrated two stories in the book, for a total of 18 pages. This is an self-published anthology, printed through Lulu.com, so you can count on the quality and workmanship associated with Lulu.

To find out more about the Indy Webcomics Group go here. They’re a great bunch of very talented and motivated people. We meet at least once a month in Indianapolis to discuss making comics, have a few drinks and sketch some comic art. The anthology was our first group project and we plan to do many more.

Here’s the video. We hope you enjoy it and decide to support independent comics.

Super Fogeys- Spy Gal Origin Guest Spot

Exciting news! Brock Heasley (Super Fogeys, Monsterplex) and David Reddick (Legend of Bill, Trek Life, Rod & Barry, etc…) recently held submissions for artists to work with them on the next Super Fogeys character origin. Brock has had many fantastic cartoonist do guest art on his characters’ origin stories. You can find them listed here. This time around, Brock has enlisted fellow Tall Tale Features creator and cartooning juggernaut David Reddick as art director. The call went out and I entered, along with many others, to be the guest artist on this 5-6 page project.

I’ve just received the great news that my entry was chosen. I will be the artist for the Spy Gal origin! As details develop and I begin work on the project I will be sure to update my blog with news and reactions about the process. And of course, I will let everyone know when and where they can read the final product.

In the mean time, go check out Super Fogeys and Legend of Bill. Both Brock and David are great and I can’t wait to work with them.

CDLF Minicomic Inks

We’re putting together a mini-comic for the art show. It’ll have  a 10 page short story and 12 pages of pinup art (see previous posts for my pinup contributions).

Over the weekend, I finished inking my pages for the short story. Overall, I think we’ve got 9 artists working on the short story and 10 artists working on the pinups, some of them working on both. I volunteered for pages 4 and 9. Here, I’ve posted the inks for those pages without text. The evil villain laugh is universal so even without the evil monologue, the page reads well.

Cock Unblocked is the title of the short story. It follows the Femmes, a team of nine superheroines during some down time between fighting crime, which turns into a rescue mission. The villain is the evil scientist Cock Blocker, who manages to imprison half of the Femmes in his dungeon of Chastity/secret laboratory.

The vibe of the comic is very campy, tongue-in-cheek superhero antics a la the Original Batman television series. The characters were created by artists from the Indy Webcomics Group working with the organizers of Indy’s Creme de Les Femmes burlesque troupe. The brainstorming session to come up with the character names was hilarious. Character designs and script by me. The comic will be printed in black and white and unshaded and will be handed out at the art show along with various coloring supplies (ie: crayolas).

So far it’s been a blast working with other artists on this project, I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.
Eventually, sometime after the show I’ll post the comic online somewhere in it’s entirety.
