Dudes, Little Guardians!

I’ve totally been working on stuff! Specifically, Little Guardians.

Little Guardians is the fantasy/adventure comic my friend Ed Cho is writing while I bring the art. We created the comic together years ago after playing a lot of video games and getting inspired. However, the comic we started to plot out exploded in size and scope and now we’re planning it as a graphic novel series of books. Picture your favorite Manga series sitting on your shelf with over 20 volumes. Like that, only it’s by a couple of dudes from the midwest.

We’ve got the first 4 books written and are well into book 5 thanks to Ed. That’s over 100 pages of just script. To put it in perspective the first 6 pages of that script gives us 25 pages of art.

I haven’t completed the first 25 pages yet but we have enough to be excited about where this is going. I can’t express enough how awesome it is to work on a project with a writer that surprises and impresses me with each new chapter. I want a time machine so I can jump forward to when we have 400 pages of comics completed so I can grab the stack of books and read it on my couch. I CAN’T WAIT to get this story out there. It’s going to be awesome.

We want to get this in print so we’re exploring options at the moment. Publishers, first and foremost. Maybe Kickstarter and self publishing. Maybe online, we’ll see. Until then, I’ll share this mocked up cover for the first book and when we have a site online for the comic, I’ll share that too.

Later!

Movember Donation Caricatures

So I caught the raising money for charity bug. Apparently it’s pretty contagious. I ran across Movember.com and love the vibe from this great organization. What you do to participate is not shave your mustache for the entire month of November. The other part of participating is collecting donations for Movember.com that go towards prostate cancer research. They leave it pretty open ended how their participators raise donations as seen in this video. So I was inspired to put my skills to use for the cause.

In return for a donation of ANY AMOUNT to my Movember profile, I will draw a caricature of the donor, embellishing a bit by adding a sweet mustache in honor of the event. So I ask that my donors include a link to a photo of them I can draw from. Flickr and Facebook are easy ways to link me to a reference.

If you’d like to donate and get a caricature from me, here’s my Movember profile where you can see all the other caricatures I’ve done so far! As of this post I’ve completed 3 and have 4 more in the cue. Going to try to catch up by then end of thanksgiving weekend.

Donate to sponsor my mustache!

SFO: SpyGal - 11 Pages Read Now!

At the time of this post, pages 1-10 have posted at www.superfogeys.com and here in my sequential art gallery. The 11th and final page will post on Tuesday, November 9th. I will of course add it to the other 10 once it does. I’m coloring it right now and I can tell you right now, it’s one of my favorites.

It’s been a real blast working on my little slice of the Super Fogeys universe. Brock’s characters and story are awesome and the man himself, dedicated and enthusiastic about his craft. He’s one of the good guys in webcomics right now. Seriously!

When I first heard there were open submissions for a guest artist spot on the Super Fogeys Origins I thought, ‘Why the hell not? Looks like fun!’ I didn’t truly expect to get the spot. Now a valuable lesson has been learned about following through with what you start. A lesson my partner Ed Cho learned right along with me, whether he wanted to or not. Don’t worry Ed! I’ve successfully completed my Fogeys pages (on time!) and am ready to get back to work on our project! A project which I will be promoting at length on this and every other blog I can get my hands on.

Stay tuned for more details. Until then, kill some time by checking out the Super Fogeys by Brock Heasley. It really is a fantastic read! Not to mention it’s host to some dedicated and vocal fans.

Also, just a quick word about Up! Fair. Me and few friends from the Indy Webcomics Group will be representing Indianapolis at the Up! Fair: A Celebration of Sequential Art and the Independent Publisher. Joining me at the IWG exhibitor’s table will be Matthew Barron, James Ratcliffe and my better half, Samantha Kyle. We’ll be participating in a panel on Saturday called Indy Collaborations along side cartoonist Dan Frazier. We will of course have copies of IWG’s comic anthology on hand at the show. We’re very excited to meet all the other creators and comic fans flocking to Up! Fair and expect it to be a fantastic show.

Until next time.

Super Fogeys Spy Gal Origin Begins

And here’s page 1!

Spy Gal Origin - Page 1

Written and lettered by Brock Heasley of Super Fogeys and Monster Plex.

Pencils, inks and colors by me.

Coloring assistance by my extraordinarily talented wife,  Samantha. She is my savior, and decided to volunteer to help me with the grunt work of filling in flat colors as I finish up inking all the pages (11 in total). Final color pallet, effects, and shading by me.

I got the guest artist gig through an open call for artists that was judged by David Reddick who passed the art baton to me.

New pages will be posted every Tuesday on Super Fogeys until the story’s end at page 11. I will also be re-posting them here.

This is panel 1 of page three in the inking stage.  If you can correctly identify the vehicle models I used, you win the non-prize! My father got them pretty much right off.

I talk more about this project in my previous post, which you can also read here!

SF Page 1, Inks Preview!

Spy Gal Origin Inks Sample Page1

Quick update on the latest goings on. I’ve been working on a now 11-page guest artist gig for Brock Heasley for his webcomic, Super Fogeys. Specifically, the Super Fogeys Origins series. Brock uses the Origins short stories to expand on his character’s worlds and backgrounds. Which is awesome, since his comic is about super heroes later in life, they have a lifetime of accumulated adventures and backgrounds that Brock can pull from.

Despite the name, many of the previous SFO shorts have been side stories, rather than character origins. Though, the story I’m working on is the actual origin story for one of the main characters, Spy Gal.

On the left, you’ll see a preview of the inks from Page 1. This is actually a small panel, 1 of 8 on the page, but I’m showing it since it’s interesting without spoiling or revealing anything. Page 1 will be colored lettered and will debut on Super Fogeys Tuesday, August 31st. I’ll be posting more panels as I get them completed.
